At A-M, We Do Things Why We Do It! Graduate Spotlight – Lilly Thornton | Class of 2026 At Anselmo-Merna School we believe students who get involved get the most out of their school experience. Through athletics, FFA, music, One Act, Speech, SkillsUSA, JAG, clubs, and other activities, students develop skills, relationships, and confidence that last long after graduation. This week’s Why We Do It spotlight features Class of 2026 graduate Lilly Thornton. During her time at A-M, Lilly participated in dance & cheer, volleyball, basketball, track, and One Act. She also plays softball in the summer! When asked what lessons she will carry with her and what advice she would give younger students, Lilly shared the following: “Being actively involved in high school gave me the opportunity to become more social, disciplined, and appreciative of the little things. Through these experiences, I learned how to manage my time effectively, collaborate with others, and develop strong leadership skills. Starting high school can be challenging, but getting involved in activities can help you make new friends and build meaningful connections. It can also strengthen your scholarship applications and open new opportunities for the future. You only experience high school once, so make the most of it and enjoy every moment while you can!” Lilly’s story is a great reminder that the value of getting involved extends far beyond the classroom. The lessons learned, friendships built, and opportunities created through activities help prepare students for success long after graduation. Get involved. Build relationships. Learn to lead. Create memories.

At A-M, We Do Things Why We Do It! At Anselmo-Merna, we believe students who get involved get the most out of their school experience. Through athletics, FFA, music, One Act, Speech, SkillsUSA, JAG, clubs, and other activities, students develop skills, relationships, and memories that last a lifetime. This week’s Why We Do It spotlight features an A-M parent, Jamie Porter. Jamie has experienced firsthand how activities shaped her kids and their family. Jamie and her husband Jeff are the parents of A-M graduates, Wyatt, Garrett, and Tyce. When asked what Jamie's boys involvement in activities meant to their family, she shared: “It was a big part of our family. From the time my boys were little, they competed in many different sports. It brought our family together and introduced us to friends who became like family. There’s nothing like knowing there are people who want your child to succeed just as much as you do.” When asked what life skills activities helped develop, Jamie said: “Sports teach a strong work ethic, perseverance through tough times, teamwork, and accountability. Ultimately, we want to raise hardworking young people who know they can accomplish anything they set their minds to.” Jamie's advice to today’s parents is simple: “Let your kids try everything. Don’t push them toward a sport or activity just because it’s what you did. Let them discover what they enjoy—they’ll have more fun and be more successful. Jamie also had a message for today’s students: “Get involved. If you don’t participate in activities, you’ll miss opportunities to meet new people, build lifelong friendships, and be part of something bigger than yourself.” At A-M, we know getting involved is about more than games, performances, or competitions. Activities help students build confidence, develop leadership, strengthen relationships, and prepare for life after high school. At A-M, We Do Things. Get involved. Build relationships. Learn to Lead Create memories .

At A-M, We Do Things! Why We Do It... Alumni Spotlight – Kyle Blakeman At Anselmo-Merna School, we believe students who get involved get the most out of their school experience. Through athletics, FFA, music, One Act, Speech, SkillsUSA, JAG, and countless other opportunities, students develop skills and relationships that last far beyond graduation. This week’s Why We Do It spotlight features A-M alumnus Kyle Blakeman. Today, Kyle is a producer, operates a seed business, coaches youth athletics, and serves on the Anselmo-Merna Foundation Board of Directors. During his time at A-M, he participated in football, basketball, track, and 4-H. When asked what lessons from high school activities have stayed with him, Kyle shared: “High school activities taught me teamwork, leadership, time management, and the importance of commitment and responsibility.” Kyle also shared his belief that students who get involved are positively impacted in adulthood. At A-M, we know participation is about more than wins. Activities help students build confidence, develop leadership, learn resilience, and create friendships. Whether it’s athletics or activities, involvement helps prepare students for success in school, in their careers, and in life. It also creates a strong connection in our community. At A-M, We Do Things. Get involved. Build relationships. Learn leadership. Create memories. Prepare for life.
